American Red Cross of the Greater Lehigh Valley: Military Services

American Red Cross Lehigh Valley

The American Red Cross of the Greater Lehigh Valley is today’s featured organization in the “12 Weeks of Christmas” program, and has been presented with a $1,000 donation from First Generation. Red CrossThe American Red Cross is an international humanitarian organization that provides relief to victims of disasters and helps people prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies. Additionally, the American Red Cross serves as the emergency communications link between armed forces personnel and their loved ones back home.

red-cross-4This organization began in 1862 when Henry Dunant, a young Swiss businessman, wrote a book about his time on an Italian battlefield where 40,000 troops were killed or wounded and left without help. This book led to the creation of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the Geneva Conventions, international treaties to protect war victims. The ICRC was introduced to America by Clara Barton, who learned about the organization during her visit to Europe after the Civil War. Upon her return, she founded the American Association of the Red Cross.

According to their website, the local Red Cross Chapter helps, on average, more than one family a day connect with a soldier, sailor, airman, or marine. They strive to enable members of the military to have an immediate connection with their loved ones back home in the Lehigh Valley. In times of dire emergency, the Red Cross can also supply grants to servicemen and women and their families to help them through a crisis. To learn more about the Red Cross’s Military Services, email the local chapter or call 610-865-4400.
